Why Organic Personal Care?

Our question is: If the organic products are safer, environmentally friendly, AND are actually MORE effective than dangerous chemically derived products, why NOT use organics?

Properly formulated organic personal care products aren't just safer and more gentle, they are very good for you. They often work in more than one way to improve your health. They are also more effective (not less, as the big companies want you to believe). The "myth" that natural skin care products are more gentle for the skin but not as effective as synthetic dermatologic brands, is spread by the "chemically inclined" companies. Really, nothing could be further from the truth.

Organic products are produced using materials and practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural systems as a whole. Organic farming is safer for the environment as it helps to give back to nature by maintaining and replenishing the soil rather than depleting it. The goal of organic agriculture is to utilize soil life, plants, animals, and people during productivity.

At AvivNaturals, we choose to use natural organic botanicals and ingredients over cheaper synthetic ingredients. When produced in laboratories and factories around the world these chemical synthetics release tons of hazardous bi-products into the environment.

These chemically derived products are not good for the environment and they are not good for your skin/body. The composition of many personal care products includes toxic, carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting materials. The FDA does not regulate the cosmetic industry, which includes skin care and toiletries. According to the FDA, “A cosmetic manufacturer may use any ingredient or raw material and market the final product without government approval.” A few toxins are banned, but many more known toxins and known carcinogens are allowed in cosmetic formulations. Less than one percent of the FDA’s budget is for skin care.

The US has banned only 10 ingredients from cosmetic's use. The EU has banned 1100+.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that 884 chemicals used in personal care products and cosmetics are known to be toxic. A Canadian study in Pediatric Drugs cites cosmetic and personal care products as the most common cause of unintentional poisonings of kids under six.

Recent media attention to phthalates is prompting more and more concerned consumers to look for something safer. In July, three consumer protection groups released independent test results showing 52 of 72 consumer products like hair spray, perfume, nail polish, food wrap and medical supplies contained a dangerous class of endocrine-disrupting industrial solvents, called phthalates.

Pthalates, which are known to cause reproductive problems, are softeners/solvents found in many cosmetic products such as fragrances and nail polish. We do not use them in any of our AvivNaturals, AvivBotanicals or AvivMinerals products.

Another of the most common and notorious cosmetic toxins is sodium laurel sulfate. It is in many cosmetics, and can even be found in some organically labeled body care products. It is not in any of our products.

Just as common is the toxin methyl paraben, also surprisingly found in many organic personal care products. Parabens, widely used as preservatives in the vast majority of skin lotions and creams, have all sorts of neurotoxicity concerns. In the past, worries over methyl paraben have centered on its low systemic toxicity, which can cause allergic reactions. Now methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butylparaben have been found to be weakly estrogenic. While parabens are not potent estrogens, continuous topical exposure may pose a danger.

Our skin is our body's largest organ. About 60% of the products we put on it our absorbed directly into our bloodstream. Many of the chemical ingredients that the big companies use to extend shelf-life, or make things look and smell better are dangerous, some are even carcinogens (known to cause cancer). There are superior alternatives to personal care we can use without poisoning our bodies, so why not use them? The reason they aren't used by the big mass market companies is simply because it's cheaper to use chemical toxins than to use natural ingredients. We believe there's enough money to be made without doing harm (or even taking the chance of doing harm). It's simple enough and cost effective enough to formulate a product that delivers God's goodness as well as results.
